Rock Manifesto

Sophia Prescott

Rock and roll started off as a genre of music in the 1950s and has developed into many different types of music throughout the generations. This type of music can create different types of feels and moods depending on the type of rock you’re listening to. As a generation, we have steered away from rock music and focus much more on pop music created by a computer. The beauty of rock music is that it can as well be mixed in by other genres of music, such as blues and folk. Lyrics of rock generally stress romantic love and positivity. Today’s music tends to focus more on bragging and the sadness in the world. Going back to the type of music our parents and even grandparents learned to love and enjoy should come back into style because it could create a happier feel to the music and art in today’s world. There should be some type of change in the music we listen to today because it could have an influence on people’s feelings since music is something people turn to for various reasons. My parents talk about artists such as The Beatles and Aerosmith  and reflect on the joy they used to have listening to their music growing up and even going to different rock concerts. To this day, putting a Beatles song on brings joy to both of my parents and unfortunately I don’t think it will be the same feeling for my generation since music isn’t the same anymore. It will most likely make me reflect on more sad times instead of happy. Two of the most popular and well known artists today are Post Malone and Billie Eilish, both making music that is pretty dark and depressing which influences the people who enjoy listening to their music. As a way to avoid this, I and many of the people I know listen to old rock music instead of the music that’s created today to create more happiness.
