Mavericks Beach:

Mavericks is one of the top hot spots to surf in California if you're willing to risk your life. Its California’s biggest wave with a whopping 20 to 60 foot waves, though some waves can cap off at 100 feet. You often find daredevils whom are searching for a risky wave. They arrive to this beach ready to ride the giant. They walk by the memorials of surfers who died in the waves. Even surfing legends like Mark Foo and Sion Milosky have lost their lives. People don’t realize how deadly these waves are.

The Farm:

Hundred-year-old eucalyptus trees line the twisted dirt driveway. They stand proud and tall with their 5-foot bases firmly planted. The branches and leaves create an archway over this magical road, which stretches about half a mile. At the top of the driveway, goats, and chickens run to the fence to greet the newcomers while the peacocks screech, “people are coming, people are coming.” The sky has cleared, creating a sunny blue sky that surrounds the property. Across the canyon, a river of fog flows from the top of the mountain to the bottom, trapped. Overlooking the ocean, dark and ominous clouds creep into the coast of California. The only place bright and clear in Fog Town is this farm. My farm.

Pumpkin Patch:

Once upon a time, there was this Giant. It’s not a typical Giant standing 20 feet tall with hairy legs, narrow eyes, and large hands, no. It’s a pumpkin! They call them Giants. Five miles south from a small town on the coast goats are raised, hay pyramids are created, and pumpkins are grown. They aren’t the typical pumpkin you buy from the grocery store, or even the farmers market, these are from Bob’s Pumpkin Patch. The largest, the orangest, the most valuable, and the most beautiful pumpkins are grown. Cameras scan the patch 24/7, making sure the teenage pumpkin thieves don’t come. The night before Halloween, the big yellow moon illuminates Bob’s Patch. The pumpkins all know that early morning of Halloween, they will be harvested and weighed at the town’s pumpkin weigh-off. Last year our rivals, Farmer John’s Pumpkin Farm, won by 4 pounds. They got the title of “Beautiful 2,175-Pound Beast”. As the pumpkins lay in their beds, one last night they chant, “This year is ours to win!” “And who will win the 2020 title?” asks the moon. “We will! We must! We can!” yell the pumpkins as they drift off to sleep, getting their last hours of beauty rest.

Goals:

Based on the 2D neighborhood maps you’ve created, compose a story where the main plot unfolds within the map. Think back to the three discussion points we discussed as a group on Wed such as the tennis club . Consider usage of hyperboles in your narrative.

Storytelling, World creation, character development, augmented narratives, Imagineering interactive moments within a static map.

Prompt:

Taking inspiration from their 2D folk maps, students will incorporate a “choose-your-own tall tale adventure” type narrative, augmenting fictitious elements to their neighborhood maps.

Guidelines:

Start out by coming up with your responses to these folk world-building tasks:

  1. Select 3 areas on your map to exaggerate. (ie. pumpkin patch, tennis club, cupcake shop, the woods, etc.)

  2. Choose 1 epicenter on the map. This location should serve as the main gathering point, destination, or other. If this location is currently the “post office”- come up with a new name and purpose for visiting this location. However, the new augmented version of the post office should still carry essential elements and traits such as serving as the “delivery portal” or “message carrier” or “Hedwig’s birthplace”

  3. Identify two traits or values that you consider to be a defining aspect of the subculture of the area you mapped out. Now, picture two people--one for each trait or value--whose respective appearances and general ways of embody the particular trait or value they are meant to embody. Then, amplify each character's defining traits and characteristics in an elaborate or exaggerated way.

  4. Introduce objects that are scattered throughout different pathways that the traveler seeks to accumulate or deliver or consume for a certain reward or outcome once they arrive at their destination. These “pick up objects” should resonate with the overall theme and ambiance of the landscape. For example, if your map depicts rows of bakeries and restaurants, you may have “crumbs” leading the track- or even better, floating cupcakes that are hiding on top of trees and rooftops.

Deliverables:

  • AUGMENTED NEIGHBORHOOD NARRATIVE

  • EPICENTER COLLAGE -- zoom into an epicenter and depicts its environmental ambiance through collage (at least 3 layers)
